June 2021 Running Update

If you’re new to Journey to Chamonix, then welcome to my monthly running update!

Each month I track my progress to my goal of running in the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB), which I’m hoping to achieve in the next few years. Qualification races, lotteries and a Strava load of training to do first though. For the latest progress read on!

Since last update

A new training block in preparation for the Surf Coast Century (SCC) is now well underway. I had a couple of weeks off after the Great Ocean Road Marathon to allow my body to recover. The focus is now on getting myself right for the big event of the year, the SCC 100km, my longest Ultra Marathon to date.

I have been using a training plan to ensure a more focused approach to my preparation. From a low base, I have been building my weekly mileage by 15% per week. The plan cycles through 4 weeks of building kms, then a recovery week with smaller mileage required. Following a training plan has worked well in the past and I expect to continue to do so for future events. I would absolutely recommend anyone else focusing on a new distance or event to follow one. However, before making any decisions regarding your running or other active workouts, please do your own research and/or seek advice from a medical professional.

I have experienced some minor niggles during my training however at this stage they are being carefully managed and are not posing major issues.

Toward the end of the month, I also conducted a mid year review of my 2021 goals that were set at the beginning of the year. See how I’m tracking here. I’m on track with a few but falling behind with others. My training for the SCC will put me in good stead to reach several by the end of the year.

Thanks for checking in on my progress and all the best with your own workouts and events you’re tackling in July! Check out my Race Schedule for more detail on other events I’m looking to tackle in 2021 and beyond.
