2021 Race Schedule

Below outlines the race schedule that I will be adopting in order to:

  • Gain the required points for Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB) entry;
  • Build experience in the distances required;
  • Get stronger mentally and physically in my running; and
  • Enjoy the race experiences and meet new like minded people!

This will be subject to change (particularly with the COVID restrictions still in place!) but I believe having a plan is important to work towards.

Update 15th February. I have made a few changes to the initial Race Schedule I had planned for the year. Changes are in BLUE below.

1 I entered the 2XU Triathlon Series Race 5 in the Olympic Distance team event with a friend. I’ll be doing the 1.5 km swim and the 10 km run. Should be a bit of fun!

2 I was hoping to do the Wonderland Run in the amazing Grampians national park. However, at the time, the Surf Coast Century (SCC) had not released the event date. As this has now been set just 2 weeks after, I’ll have to give this one a miss this year. The SCC, which is required to get the UTMB qualification points, is the priority for 2021.

3 The Surf Coast Century (4 points) along with the Alpine Challenge (6 points) should earn me enough points for the initial entry into the UTMB. Unlikely to gain entry the first year I apply but who knows! The Alpine Challenge 100 mile will help me to build experience running in the mountains (Australian Mountains = European Foothills) and be great preparation for bigger events.

4 I’ve tentatively booked the postponed Alpine Challenge for early 2022. If there are any dramas with COVID restrictions or UTMB point eligibility for the Surf Coast Century (SCC), the Alpine Challenge 100 km will be my back up race.

5I was booked in to run in the You Yangs Trail Run 30 km. However, due to COVID restrictions, this one has been postponed. I might need to book in a few races for later in the year to make up for some of these cancelled events!

In addition to these events, I’ll no doubt be entering in some local races for fun as well as Parkrun as often as possible.

Feel free to let me know of any suggestions you may have to get me closer to the UTMB.
