April 2021 Running Update

If you’re new to Journey to Chamonix, then welcome to my monthly running update! 

Each month I track my progress to my goal of running in the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB), which I’m hoping to achieve in the next few years. Qualification races, lotteries and a Strava load of training to do first though. For the latest progress read on!

Since last time

April began and although I was still recovering from my rolled ankle, I was back into training for the Great Ocean Road Marathon. The marathon has been on the cards for months and I am hoping to do well (as well as you can with 7 weeks off training with an injury!).

After my time away from running in March, I was glad to be running again. Correction, I was overjoyed to be back. I run so I can get fresh air, push my body and clear my mind. It’s not an addiction but when I take a break my body suffers. I love to move freely, enjoy nature and run fast. Everyone has their own reasons for why they run. Those are mine. 

I was feeling a little nervous about my condensed training block. I needed to build up my weekly kilometres which included a long run to mimic something similar to that of the 44 km marathon. I was aiming for my final long run to be 34 km and I expected my longest week to 65 km. I was walking the tightrope between building too quickly and getting injured OR not doing enough and being in poor shape for the event. A runners’ dilemma!

Hopefully I’m now on track to tackle and conquer the Great Ocean Road Marathon next month. So excited for it!
