7 Reasons to run the Great Ocean Road Marathon
The Great Ocean Road Marathon is an annual marathon event that takes place in Victoria, Australia. This event attracts runners from all over the world and offers a variety of distances, from the 1.5km Kids run to the 60km Ultra Marathon.
I’ve now run the Great Ocean Road Marathon 3 times (2019, 2021 & 2022), the first of which was my very first marathon. It’s amazing. It’s tough. It is one that I’ll continue to go back to for as many years as I can. If you’re considering running the Great Ocean Road Marathon, here are a few reasons why it’s worth it.
1. The Views
If you’ve driven along the Great Ocean Road, you know. The views are amazing. As you run, you’ll be treated to some of the most stunning coastal scenery Australia has to offer, with the waves crashing against the rugged cliffs just a stone’s throw away. From the winding curves of the road itself to the rolling hills, every step of the way is a treat. So lace up your running shoes and get ready to soak up the beauty of one of the world’s most spectacular coastlines.
2. It’s tough
If you’re a runner who loves a challenge, then the Great Ocean Road Marathon should be on your bucket list. The course is tough, but it’s also one of the most rewarding races you’ll ever run. The first thing you’ll notice is the terrain – it’s hilly, winding, and unpredictable. But that’s what makes it so exhilarating.
It’s also 44 km long! The race organisers throw in an extra 2km at the end (just when you think you can’t run any further).
You’ll need to dig deep and push yourself to your limits to make it to the finish line.
3. The time of year
In addition to the challenging course and stunning scenery, the time of year for the Great Ocean Road Marathon is another reason why you should sign up. The event takes place in May, which is a beautiful time to visit the Great Ocean Road. The weather is typically mild and sunny, with crisp mornings and comfortable temperatures throughout the day. This means that you’ll have ideal running conditions to tackle the course, with the added bonus of enjoying the great outdoors in all its glory.
Cooler temperatures than the typical Australian Summer, means that you’ll be able to push yourself to your limits without overheating or getting dehydrated.
4. It’s well run (pun intended)
From the buses transporting athletes to the start line (and from the finish) to the fully stocked aid stations and drop bags, the event has fine tuned all the logistics. The registration process is simple and the medals that greet the runners at the finish line are first class.
You won’t be disappointed with the event organisation.
5. There’s an event for Everyone!
The Great Ocean Road Running Festival has a 1.5km kids gallop, a 6km, 14km, Half Marathon, Marathon, Ultra Marathon, 12km Trail Run, 6.5km Trail Run and a 5/10km walk. There’s something for everyone!
My wife and I have been able to compete over the weekend with one on the Saturday and one on the Sunday ensuring one of us is able to look after the kids.
There are always people walking the half marathon in groups, taking in the views with the people pushing their limits in the 60km Ultra Marathon. There is something tailored to everyone’s ability.
6. It’s a great one for the family
In year’s past there’s been a kite festival, a petting zoo and other great activities for the kids. The finish line in Apollo Bay is a cheering mess of spectators and families with cowbells handed out. It’s right next to the beach for those who are feeling brave in the cooler May weather. Food trucks and coffee (or a babychino) are the perfect addition to the festival site in addition to all the other food and drink options available in Apollo Bay (check out the Apollo Bay Distillery for pizzas and drinks).
7. Sense of Accomplishment
Running from Lorne to Apollo Bay is a long way. A very long way. It takes you until you’re about half way through the run until you can actually see Apollo Bay and the finish line. It’s tough. It’s hilly. It’s spectacular scenery. It’s a must do.
In the 3 times I’ve run it, it was tough every time. It was a big achievement to finish each one even as I have become a better runner. For those of you who have finished a marathon before, it is a great achievement. For those that haven’t, the Great Ocean Road Marathon will satisfy that need. This one doesn’t fail to deliver in each iteration.
Whether you’re an experienced runner or just starting out, the Great Ocean Road Marathon promises to be an unforgettable experience that will leave you feeling inspired and rejuvenated. You’ll be taking on a course that will test your physical and mental endurance, but you’ll come out the other side feeling stronger and more accomplished than ever before.
So why not sign up today and take on the challenge? You won’t regret it!

I do love the way you have presented this specific problem and it does indeed provide us some fodder for thought. On the other hand, because of what I have experienced, I just hope as other remarks pile on that folks stay on issue and not get started on a tirade involving the news du jour. Yet, thank you for this excellent piece and whilst I can not necessarily agree with this in totality, I value the point of view.
