October 2022 Running Update

If you’re new to Journey to Chamonix, then welcome to my monthly running update!

Each month I track my progress to my goal of running in the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB), which I’m hoping to achieve in the next few years. Qualification races, lotteries and a Strava load of training to do first though. For my latest progress read on!

Since last update

The Melbourne Marathon had been earmarked as my target race for 2022 and I was eager to achieve a big goal; running a sub 3 hour marathon for the first time. I started well, holding a good pace. I reached the half marathon point in 1:28:55 (a pace of 4:13 min/km / 6:47 min/mil). I was on track and feeling relatively good. However, toward the 37 km mark, my pace dropped. I began to fade late and found it difficult to keep my pace up.

I ran into the MCG and across the finish line in a time of 3:00:14. I was 15 seconds short of my goal. I was disappointed but I reminded myself that I had set a new Personal Best (PB) by over 12 minutes. Quite an achievement! Check out my full Race Report Here.

Once I had recovered from the Melbourne Marathon, I wanted to see how my training block had impacted my shorter distance racing times. We journeyed to Parkville Parkrun to try and set a PB for the 5km. I hadn’t run Parkville Parkrun before, however I had been to the park recently to break my Half Marathon PB.

As there was flooding throughout much of Melbourne, Parkville Parkrun was one of the few Parkruns that were running. There was a big turnout. I started toward the front and went out hard – a little too hard. I settled into a steady pace and continued to push. I managed to hold a pace of 3:28 min/km and finish in a time of 17:18 for the event. Not too shabby! A Personal Best (PB) of 37 seconds. I was pretty happy.

It was definitely an easier month as I recovered from my sub 3hr Melbourne Marathon attempt. I tried to give my body a time to rest as I turned my attention to what’s next. As we’ll have a new addition to our family shortly, my availability will likely decrease. However, I’m still trying to establish a good base for my Ultra Trail Australia (UTA) 100km challenge in May 2023. I’ll need it to enter the UTMB ballot. One step closer!

Thanks for checking in on my progress and all the best with your own workouts and events you’re planning for January! Check out my Race Schedule for more detail on other events I’m looking to tackle in 2022 and beyond.

  1. Hi, i think that i saw you visited my site thus i came to “return the favor”.I am attempting to find things to improve my website!I suppose its ok to use a few of your ideas!!

  2. My developer is trying to persuade me to move to .net from PHP. I have always disliked the idea because of the expenses. But he’s tryiong none the less. I’ve been using WordPress on various websites for about a year and am concerned about switching to another platform. I have heard very good things about blogengine.net. Is there a way I can import all my wordpress content into it? Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated!

  3. I’m really enjoying the theme/design of your web site. Do you ever run into any browser compatibility issues? A small number of my blog visitors have complained about my website not working correctly in Explorer but looks great in Chrome. Do you have any suggestions to help fix this problem?
