If you’re new to Journey to Chamonix, then welcome to my monthly running update!
Each month I track my progress to my goal of running in the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB), which I’m hoping to achieve in the next few years. Qualification races, lotteries and a Strava load of training to do first though. For the latest progress read on!

It’s May already! This year is certainly flying along. The month of May was a big one for getting a new Marathon PB, exploring a new local Parkrun and looking ahead to how I can achieve another big goal in 2022.
The Great Ocean Road Marathon was my standout event for May (and potentially the biggest for all of 2022!), and it did not disappoint. Without the perfect lead up, I was still able to run the 42.2 km in a time of 3:11:18. I missed my “A” goal of 3:10, but I was still incredibly happy with the way I had run. This new PB is 36 mins quicker than my next best! How could I be disappointed with that!?
I finished in 48th place out of 791 finishers. Check out my race report HERE or for previous years, see how I went in 2019 & 2021.
After I had recovered from the Great Ocean Road Marathon, I was eager to get back into the Parkrun circuit. There was a recently opened Parkrun not too far away from home, the Dorset Recreation Reserve Parkrun which we were keen to check out.
It was a relatively flat course around the edge of Dorset Golf Course. I pushed hard and ran an 18:13 for the 5km. This was the second best 5km I had ever run. Another great achievement for the month!
Looking ahead, there are still a number of things that I’m hoping to achieve in 2022. I have booked in the Melbourne Marathon as my other main focus for the year, with the hope of achieving a Sub 3hr run. At this stage, I’m not sure if I will be able to go sub 3, but I’m giving myself every opportunity to get there.
I have planned my training schedule and purchase a Ben Parkes Advanced Marathon Training Plan which I will be using as the base for my running sessions. If I can’t go Sub 3hrs this year, I should be able to get a Sub 3:10 and get more experience running the Marathon. Game on!
Thanks for checking in on my progress and all the best with your own workouts and events you’re planning for January! Check out my Race Schedule for more detail on other events I’m looking to tackle in 2022 and beyond.
