10 Things Runners want for Christmas
I love buying Christmas presents for people. The joy you see when friends or family receive something they have been wanting is, for me, one of the most enjoyable moments you could experience.
However, trying to find the right present for those runners in your life can be difficult. Maybe they are very particular, or maybe you’re wondering if they really need another pair of shoes (trust me they do). Especially if you’re not a runner yourself, this list of 10 things runners want for Christmas should help point you in the right direction.
Some may think this list is a little premature for Christmas but with online, parcel & post delays, I think the timing is perfect. Plus, it’s never too early to start thinking about presents for loved ones in this difficult year.
I’ve also included information on whether it is necessary to check with the recipient before purchasing and giving. There are some items of running gear that need to be very carefully selected to make up a runners kit. Other items matter less. Cost indicators are in AUD. These should be used as a guide only.
Before we begin, I just wanted to let people know that I am not sponsored in any way or have gear supplied to me. These are just running essentials that I believe almost every runner should have in their wardrobe and I love to use myself (or a similar item). So here we go, a list of 10 things that runners are going to want and need for Christmas.
1. Patagonia Houdini Jacket
Check with the recipient first? Perhaps – if you know their size no need.
Price: $120
The Patagonia Houdini Jacket is one of my go-to running items. Lightweight and water resistant, it keeps me warm at the start of those colder winter runs. It scrunches up and can be stored in its own small internal pocket, allowing it to be carried for the rest of the run when it is no longer needed. No one would be disappointed in receiving this one.
2. Buff, Ciele or Fractel Hat
Check with the recipient first? Not necessary
Price: Buff $25 Hat $50 – 60
A staple of every runner’s wardrobe, to be used especially in the summer but also in winter. Almost always 1 size fits all. Check out their stylish range and pick a colour you think they will like. Ciele and Fractel hats are very breathable and a great fit. Great for a stocking filler or as the main gift.
3. Running Books
Check with the recipient first? No – if they have it they can regift.
Price: $20
Running books are great for those times we’re resting up or tapering. If we can’t be running at least we can be reading about running. My favourite author in this genre is Adharanand Finn. The former journalist has written The Way of the Runner, Running with the Kenyans and The Rise of the Ultra Runners. The latter being one of my all time favourite books. An audio book voucher with some recommendations should also be considered.
4. Running Watch
Check with the recipient first? Definitely.
Price: $250 – $1000+
The running watch is a necessity (well almost) for all runners. At the base level, they track time, pace, distance and usually Heart Rate. As the price increases, so do the features, which may include Sleep Tracking, GPS, Altimeter, Safety Assistance Tracking and a host of other additional features you will definitely not need. The most expensive item on the list, it is well worth checking with the recipient of this gift first as they are quite likely to be interested or used to wearing a particular brand and/or model. I have used a Garmin Forerunner for many years which has worked well. Try and get this one on a sale to save some $$$.
5. Body Glide
Check with the recipient first? No
Price: $20
Another stocking filler, Body Glide is an anti chafe balm which is a necessity for anyone running over 10-15 km. Just trust me, use it.
Comes in his and hers.
6. Race Fees
Check with the recipient first? If you’re looking to prepay – yes. If it’s cash – not necessary.
Expected Price: Local event $50. Big Marathon $130. International Event $2000+
For those who love giving experiences, chipping in or funding all costs for a race is well worth the money. Depending on the recipient, this could be a local trail running series, marathon race fees or entry into an international event. Just depends on the budget as well as the types of events that they are interested in running.
You may not be able to get away with race fees for your local Parkrun though.
7. Goodr Running Sunglasses
Check with the recipient first? No
Price: $50
My go to running gear for when the sun is brightly shining. Almost all Goodr Running Sunnies are around the $50 mark which is right in the ballpark for most gift amounts. Even if your running friend or family member has a pair already, another to keep in the car or as a spare will not go astray. Pretty stylish and they do not move or bounce when you’re running.
8. Running Store Voucher
Check with the recipient first? No
Price: $20+
In this difficult time of COVID19 restrictions and decreased shopping levels, the local running stores have been suffering. These businesses need our support again. A voucher from your local running store is the best way to support them as well as purchasing (or putting some money towards) some running shoes for your friend or family member. They also have a whole host of other clothing, accessories and unnecessary running gear that will bring a smile to your face.
9. Running Gloves
Check with the recipient first? Only for sizing (or have a guess).
Price: $10
Another stocking filler. The Decathlon Warm & Lightweight Tactile Running gloves will only set you back $10 and they will come in handy for every runner you know. Especially on those cold mornings, they’ll keep your hands nice and toasty warm (unless it’s -10C then you might need something a little more heavy duty). They pack down neatly so you can stow them in a pocket when you’re done using them. A great extra on Christmas day if you need to fill out your present a little.
10. GoPro Hero10 Black
Check with the recipient first? Perhaps
Price: $600
For your adventurous running family and friends (if you’ve got a few $$ to spare), the GoPro Hero10 Black is one of the newest action cameras on the market. For those that like to document their runs or capture some scenery as they tackle the mountains or coastal regions, this is the camera for them. Not cheap but I don’t think they’ll be disappointed.
